Under the Westway
This project initially started as an exploration into the pollution levels at the Westway Sports and Fitness Centre underneath the A40 motorway in London. The pollution levels have exceeded the EU Pollutant limits of 40 µg/mᶟ since 2014 and have been rising ever since. Common pollution hazards include a mixture of toxic NO₂ gas and dangerous particulate pollution commonly found in diesel soot.
Photographs taken from underneath the Westway Motorway. The area featured an active stables alongside a sports centre and playground. I designed an 11 page book using the technique of fumage drawing. The pages gradually get smokier over time, the reader was instructed to wear white gloves so that the smoke rubs off with each turn of the page.

This film helps to illustrate the Westway problem and shows how I physically collected some of the pollution and encased it in clear resin.
